Goodbye, Eri (Sayonara Eri) by Tatsuki Fujimoto is a one-shot manga that’s really about grief, memory, and how stories distort reality when you try to preserve someone through film. At the surface, it follows a boy named Yuta who is told by his dying mother to film her life and turn it into a movie after she passes away. He does exactly that—but when he shows the film at school, people mock it, especially because he adds a dramatic “movie-like” ending (an explosion as he runs from a hospital). Feeling humiliated and isolated, he spirals into despair. Then he meets Eri, a strange girl who loves his film and encourages him to make another one. Together, they start filming a new “movie” of their lives, blending real events with fiction—turning everything into something cinematic, stylized, and slightly unreal. As the story continues, Eri becomes terminally ill too, and the idea of filming becomes more intense: it stops being just documentation and becomes a way of reshaping reality into something meaningful. After her death, Yuta grows up still haunted by the footage, constantly re-editing it, unable to settle on a “true” version of her. Later, the story shifts again in a surreal direction: Eri appears to re-emerge in a way that blurs life, memory, and fiction, and the ending leaves you unsure what was real, what was filmed, and what was constructed as part of the “movie.” #s3ralwaysreal #goodbyeri #fyp #real #relatable
