The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel to Whittier is one of the longest and most unique highway tunnels in North America. When I was growing up in Alaska, the only way to reach Whittier was by train. Years after I moved away, the tunnel opened to vehicle traffic while still sharing the same passage with trains. Before our trip, I tried explaining to my family how the tunnel worked, shared railroad tracks, that’s all I knew, and a mountain between you and your destination. Judging by their reactions, they weren’t entirely convinced I knew what I was talking about… and honestly, they had me second-guessing myself for a minute! 😂 But once we rolled through, everyone agreed it was one of the coolest experiences of the trip. Driving directly on the railroad tracks through a mountain is something you don’t forget. If you’re planning an Alaska adventure, put Whittier and the tunnel on your bucket list. The drive alone is worth it, and we’re already planning another trip back to explore even more of beautiful Prince William Sound.
