penguin employee here: the reason a book will be in black spine and modern classic editions is that Penguin US does not publish the modern classics series, only penguin UK has both series, so the black spine east of Eden is the American edition, the modern classic edition is the UK

I prefer the white/blue and can't find them here in the US. I always have to order them from the UK. I've always assumed the black edition was for the US and the white/blue was for the UK exclusively 🤷‍♀️

My absolute favourite Penguin editions are the Twentieth Century Classics editions. Truly stunning. I always grab one whenever I come across one in charity shops. I think they made the most beautiful edition ever of East of Eden, dying to get my hands on one of them at some point.

My white spines are so much better quality than my blues – the paper, the ink on the covers, and the binding itself are all noticeably nicer… really interesting video

I collected the white spines and got soooo annoyed by the shift to blue. I've got enough of both now that I've cooled off but I really can't begin to grieve the orange text on the black classics yet. know it's for accessibility but it's much uglier 😭
