Sadly, I totally agree with your analysis of the inner workings of male-dom. My son died a few years ago; I was talked into going to therapy. I couldn’t do more than the first session; I filled the silence with small talk and refused to be vulnerable. I still haven’t found a way to articulate my grief; it’s like a speech impediment… I know the words, but I can’t get them out. Great content, massive thanks for making us think.

I promised myself I'd listen to this without preconceived ideas, I was disappointed...

I'm 53 now and I find that often I get angry because I have so many other emotions inside my body that I cannot express properly

Do you think teaching emotional intelligence in schools would be valuable?

This is an outstanding explanation. It provides an much more complete picture of an understanding I’ve been trying to arrive at.

I started a men’s circle looking to remedy what you’re speaking about in this video. You explained this so well.

I enjoy your talk... but what age, culture and socio-economic groups are you discussing?... perhaps hearing comparisons between wider social spectrums would be a good comparison for educational purposes... 👍✌

This is so so genius Dr Simone. I can't believe I came across such a piece of information. I was raised by a mum, and the things I've been through I'd rather put it in music or art or creating content. I love you Dr Simone.

Thank you! Having worked in HMPPS, after some years as a Social Worker, I'd developed a knack for recognising these discrepancies in others, but failed to acknowledge them within my self!
The patriarchy is discombobulation which separates us all from viral realisations!

Interesting content. As a mother I parent my son to have a range of emotions. I am connected to my son who is 17 years old. I believe the whole experience of being on a football team was so negative for him, because the boys didn’t communicate properly and not all but most were as you described. He was glad to leave the team.

Wow… just wow… Thank you 🙏🏻 The road has been difficult, still is to be fair. Some of these realisations have dawned slowly, over a very long time and not with particularly positive outcomes. The results have led to a solitary existence, an inability to interact and fear is most definitely the foundation. Internalising the gradual awareness and the resultant emotional responses because it is contrary to normalised behaviour, attitudes and acceptable responses, embedded in cultural norms, is a double edged sword. My father was stoic, he internalised everything because he didn’t have the tools. I’ve tried to be different in a changing, but far from perfect world. Had some relationships that allowed a certain degree of openness. I’ve tried to pass on some of what I’ve learned to my son, who I think is far more emotionally mature at his age than I was. That said, I think he struggles because all the negative connotations you mention are still prevalent and reinforced by society. At times I wonder if I’ve set him up to fail in a very unforgiving patriarchal world. But we talk, in a way that my father and I were never able to, so I take that as one of the really positive outcomes of this journey. Grateful for your words and so sorry to hear about the catalyst for your understanding. Blessings

I feel exactly the same way. I see it in my own circle and in society as well. In one way or another, everyone was severely restricted in the old society and reduced to mere functions. I think it’s so wonderful that we’re now able to connect with one another as human beings in all our diverse uniqueness and can heal these old wounds caused by being reduced to functional roles—both individually and collectively. We’re living in a good time.
