While it is good to question why people may do what they do and try to understand them. We have to be careful not to give them excuses for their actions, especially when they have extreme impacts on those around them. choosing to give up freedom because you refuse to use true reasoning to find the way out of a situation is not an answer. It is like putting a band aid on bullet wound.

just wanna say, binged a bunch of your videos and I am loving it, I have always found WW2 western front content either pretends that these people doing horrible things aren't like us, but also not just glazing over it and being about the battles. I'm definitely going to have to pick up one of these, huge read but what book out of the ones you have would you recommend for audio book? cheers from the west coast :)

I have heard from a leftist that using “totalitarian” to describe the USSR was and is CIA propaganda. I know you’re a scholar of Nazism; there is a tendency to conflate the Nazis and Soviets which seems to obscure more than it reveals. Looking at Soviet history honestly is VITAL. Neither uncritical support or opposition. How does Arendt aid or hinder in that regard? This is why I’m skeptical of looking at WW2 and the Nazis in isolation—they were part of a whole world in crisis from 1914 or even 1884 with the partition of Africa. I’ve come to figure 1917-1923 is more critical to understanding the 20th century than 1933-45. How unique were the Nazis really considering: British, American and French—Dutch, Belgian, Portuguese, Japanese—Imperialism; Turkish, Polish, Yugoslav state-building; and Italian and Soviet fascism and communism? How much value would you put to Hobsbawm’s Age of Extremes?

What makes Arendt so formidable is the way she interweaves individual and societal, private lived life, and public life of intersubjectivity, history and discourse. You can see how she beautifully takes Heidegger, holds on to the good parts and develops them. What always sticks with me is the dual impulse of authoritarianism: on the one hand the will to rule, and on the other the will to be ruled, to have ambiguities erased, to retreat from your responsibility as a political subject.

We are 5+ generations past WWII now. All of those that lived it are gone now and all we have are the stories and movies of that era. No one today has any real idea of the death and destruction that took place from 37 to 45.
