@chiefgyk3d: Space data centers? The physics just don't add up. Engineers care about reality, not sci-fi hype. Keep infrastructure grounded. #TechSkeptic #DataCenters #SpaceX #ElonMusk #ITInfrastructure #Physics

Strangely enough I learned this basic principal from playing Oxygen Not Included rather than the many years of high school physics😂

wait wait wait, so you're saying the rocket company (with satellites and vehicles in space) doesn't understand thermal management in space.

To those saying the physics and math totally work out and Elon is totally right… Where’s Elon’s hyperloop? Just one small example of how we are still waiting on earth…

unless there's some hidden radical cooling solution that only works in space we're like a decade away from even testing this

Let’s put a datacenter where it’s going to be almost impossible to cool. Where it’s going to be very hard to maintain and do the regular hardware refresh. Where the delicate electronics will be hit constantly with cosmic rays so we’ll have to use special hardware… and so on.

I think you’re not really understanding what spaceX means when they’re talking about data centers in space. You probably assume that it’s supposed to be one giant facility in orbit which would indeed be impossible. What they are planning however is a giant satellite constellation like starlink with the chips on board that is constantly communicating with each other. That is definitively possible but it might not be cost effective.

under appreciated axis on which it won’t work: datacenters on earth have hundreds of thousands of gpus in them and the density is incredibly important for performance, having nodes flying around in orbit would be awful for intra-node data movement, which would totally kill things like disagg. prefill/decode or even just like pipeline parallelism. all of that means that you would be getting a fraction of the value out of the expensive gpus that you would on earth, so it just doesn’t make sense even economically or from a llm inference or training pov. it’s all just very silly.

Wait, how our planet radiate heat from being heated by the sun 24/7 if space isn't cold? We should cook up like million years ago by that logic

maybe not in orbit "space" but on the dark side of the moon "space" very feasible 🤷
