Charles XII of Sweden dominated the anti-Swedish coalition during the early years of the Great Northern War (1700–1721) through bold leadership and brilliant military tactics. Facing an alliance of Russia, Denmark–Norway, and Saxony–Poland–Lithuania, he quickly defeated Denmark and forced it out of the war in 1700. Later that year, he won a stunning victory against a much larger Russian army at the Battle of Narva. Charles then focused on Poland and Saxony, defeating their forces in several campaigns and forcing King Augustus II the Strong to renounce the Polish crown in 1706.
