@harleyweiglestudio: Cylinders are the starting point for every ceramic artist, professional or hobbyist, when we first begin our journeys on the potters wheel. The cylinder is a gateway to more complex forms such as mugs, jars, teapots, vases, etc. Experimenting with the individual stages of the throwing process, such as how we center, greatly impact the final form. When trying to throw taller cylinders, while trying to utilize each ounce of the material, I like to alter the height and width in which I center my mass of clay. With the base, do you want it yo be the size it is going to be when the piece is finished? I've had issues when I try to widen the base on taller pieces; I often end up with a tear that starts where the wall meets the base when I start my pulls.
