“On the Day when some faces will be bright (radiant) and some faces will be darkened. As for those whose faces are darkened, it will be said: ‘Did you disbelieve after having believed? Then taste the punishment for what you used to deny and disbelieve.’”
What does it mean?
This verse is describing the Day of Judgment.
Bright faces symbolize people who remained faithful, obedient to God, and were successful in the Hereafter.
Darkened faces symbolize people who rejected faith, turned away from God’s guidance, or knowingly disbelieved after recognizing the truth.
The verse is not about skin color or race. In Arabic, a “bright face” often means happiness, honor, and success, while a “darkened face” signifies sorrow, disgrace, fear, or regret. It is a spiritual and symbolic description of people’s condition on the Day of Judgment.
The next verse explains the other group:
“And as for those whose faces are bright, they will be in the mercy of Allah, abiding therein forever.” (Qur’an 3:107)
So the overall message is a contrast between:
Those who remain true to faith and receive God’s mercy.
Those who knowingly reject faith and face accountability.
