Turning my Air France La Premiere first class seat into a bed. I was able to book Air France business class using points and then upgrade to first class 30 hours before check in. Here’s how I booked this flight for 75% off: I was flexible on a 5-day window for flying from Paris to the US, so I set flight alerts for business class availability on @roame.travel for Paris to LAX and SFO. Air France saver business class seats can go as low as 60,000 miles and if you pair that with a transfer bonus, it’s even lower. It took a few weeks before I found an Air France business class flight I wanted to book. I had SMS alerts for both CDG-LAX and CDG-SFO. **The trick here is to pick the business class route where there are the most empty first class seats, maxing out at 4. I just checked Google Flights for my exact business class flight with 4 passengers to see if all 4 first class seats were still on sale. I ended up picking CDG-LAX because they had the new La Premiere suites. I also did some comparison between the 9am and the 10am flights in recent history and noticed that the 10am flight first class seats sold out more quickly than the 9am flight. So I chose the 9am flight and booked business class using miles. Technically, Air France no longer allows upgrades to La Premiere if you booked business class with miles, but there are many datapoints where travelers have successfully done so. My recent flight is another positive datapoint. At 30 hours before the flight when you go to check in, you may be presented with the ability to upgrade to La Premiere during seat selection. Make sure to check all 4 platforms: Air France app and website as well as the KLM app and website. This is where I booked the upgrade. The price is usually around $1,500 to $3,500 depending on your route.
