@bookriot: Before Kitchen Confidential became a bestselling memoir, Anthony Bourdain was an executive chef with a story to tell. In 1999, his essay “Don’t Eat Before Reading This” appeared in The New Yorker and changed everything. It launched Bourdain into the spotlight and paved the way for one of the most influential memoirs ever written. I love Bourdain but this (oft told) account of his overnight success is not entirely accurate. He’d tried for years to become a writer. “Don’t Eat Before Reading This” was originally going to be published in a free publication but when it didn’t run, Tony’s mom — who worked for the New York Times and had connections at the New Yorker — greased the wheels so they’d take a look at it. Doesn’t mean he’s not talented. Doesn’t mean that essay and the resulting book isn’t spectacular, or that he didn’t work hard. It’s just not an overnight success story.

One of my absolute prized possessions is a signed first edition copy of A Cook’s Tour. I’ll always have a soft spot for Anthony Bourdain 💕😭
