Suzanne is so thorough. It’s been almost 20 years and we are still doing deep dives and analysis. My favorite thing is how she references her childhood, how she learned about real life history to inform HG. It is really that deep.

Yes! It was one of the first contagious diseases that showed up after humans created agriculture (living close with domesticated animals)

The Capitol also chooses which districts get healthcare at all. 13 and 8 had hospitals and doctors while 12 had one holistic healer (Katniss’ mom)

Back in high school a friend caught TB and his treatment lasted six months before he was cleared. Previously I'd thought of TB as a disease from the past, was completely shocked that it was still around

I always hate how casually and offhandedly prescription commercials mention TB and getting checked for it before starting the meds like hello 😭

I love that you brought this up! I feel like so many people seem to forget the role of heath and sickness when it comes to inequality and oppression

We actually do not know how to live in a world without tuberculosis though - TB treatment and prevention is incredibly complex due to the nature of the disease. Also, the 'cure' we've had since the 1950s is no longer effective in many cases because TB develops resistance to antibiotics incredibly quickly. It's unlikely TB could ever be completely eradicated, however we absolutely could be doing a lot more and it's true that we choose not to because the vast majority of cases occur in low-income regions
