@drjoe_md: Most people hear “ear infection” and think antibiotics. But occasionally the problem isn't the bacteria, it's the nerve. One of the challenges in medicine is that very different conditions can look similar at first. That's why new symptoms matter. If someone develops facial weakness after ear pain or an ear infection, it deserves a closer look to figure out what's actually causing it. The right diagnosis often means the right treatment, and sometimes timing makes all the difference. #ERdoctor #RamsayHuntSyndrome #BellsPalsy #MedicalEducation

I've had bells palsy twice, both times from giving birth (12 & 15 yrs ago). I had shingles around 7 yrs ago. my bells the second time was complete left side paralysis including severe ear pain. my doctors didn't really treat me. I was told it would heal on it's own. it's about 80% healed. I still don't have full range of motion and that eye waters often 😭

Yeah, but we don’t treat otitis media “inner ear infection” with cipro drops. We treat otitis externa or, infection of the skin of the ear canal with cipro drops. Could the ear canal involvement be shingles, 💯. But terminology matters.

I have a co-worker who has had Bell’s palsy for two years, symptoms have never improved. I always thought Bell’s would wax and wane, but now I’m wondering if this could be at play?

Should Bell’s palsy be treated with antivirals then? I was told to get an eye patch and use the gel to keep my eye from drying out.

I’m 4 months out from onset of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome! Thank you for spreading this information. I had ear pain that doctors thought was just an ear infection for over two weeks before getting facial paralysis. It’s way worse pain than a normal ear infection too!
