It’s was genuinely a great episode, you’re just hating for the sake of it - it’s not the book - enjoy it for what it is

When the shows own fans practically tell you you have to drop your standards to enjoy this is super telling of how bad this show has become post s1

I'm a major book fan and yep, I despise the showrunners, people keep hyping "the war and battles will be soon to come" when the best and most coherent period of this story is basically over now, which was S1 to now, I won't spoil but even as a book fan I find the latter half of the war to be a bit muddled so god knows how they will adapt that

Even when got was it’s worst, people (including me) kept watching because even tho characters like Tyrion, Daenerys and Jaime got totally botched, at SOME point you care abt them. At no fucking point in hotd’s history have i genuinely cared abt these characters. They can be cool sometimes, and give off surface level illusions of investment, but i refuse to believe anyone ACTUALLY cares abt any of these people other than like Viserys who didnt even make it to the s1 penultimate

Honestly, battle of the bastards may have flimsy writing, but at least it’s emotionally satisfying, the film making and directing is incredible, the long takes, the epic grand shots, the editing! Jon’s journey felt so investing and epic to that point and the retaking of Winterfell was so satisfying bc the show built up this story (mostly) well to this point. The Gullet was bland, all of the characters were dull, the film making was basic and the quick cut away editing was jarring taking me out of the scene with every cut, there’s no memorable spectacle it’s just, bland and boring. Even with dragons there’s barely anything interesting going on in the battle

I agree with you 100%. A lot of people are going to respond really defensively to this. I've been seeing SO many people getting very defensive and somewhat rude in the comments of other videos criticizing this episode. I think that it comes from internalizing negative critiques of the episode as a negative critique of their taste or intelligence if they enjoyed it, sort of thinking "if he thinks the episode was so stupid but I really enjoyed it, that feels like he's saying that I'm also stupid for enjoying it". And I think, to a degree, that defensive feeling could be understandable as an initial reflexive reaction. But it should only be an initial reflexive reaction that they should sit with for a bit to consider if it's fair to attack a stranger for criticizing the show or if they're only reacting so defensively because they're viewing the episode, and therefore the negative criticism of it, as an extension of themself and, if so, why it is they are so strongly associating their sense of self with a television episode to the extent that they are conflating a stranger's negative critiques of it with negative critiques of them as individuals and whether that's a healthy or fair to either party. The volume of this sort of response seems kind of troubling in the larger context of society and I think it has something to do with it indicating a trend toward us being increasingly incapable of engaging in productive discourse with another person who has different and even opposing views than us.
