Physician here. A lot of you think that epi is intuitive for a 1st or 2nd year med student, but you don’t see that we learn the entire pathway for Type 1 Hypersensitivity (what we also call anaphylaxis). If what you’re initially learning is how that pathway works, you understand how and why steroids and antihistamines work against Type 1, BUT you are not at the point in education where you learn time and onset of action, which is learnt in 3rd year and beyond. Epinepherine and its beta-adrenergic effects don’t stick out as what you would first think of using as a 2nd year med student since that’s not the main potential target you would think of in Type 1 Hypersensitivity, but when you learn how quick the onset of epinephrine is when you complete ACLS before 3rd year, it then makes sense. Most of you criticizing have learn 1 in 10,000 things you need to learn about Type 1 Hypersensitivity reactions as a doctor, but don’t think that knowing that one fact in any way makes you even close to getting to the level she will be, very shortly, at managing a patient in anaphylaxis.
