This is a profound statement about what CAREGIVING actually looks like, which is rarely loud and almost never visible - until the moment it catches you. It's a Toyota ad from 2015 called "Loving Eyes" and it plays the same thirty years of a father and daughter's life twice - once through his eyes as he watches her grow up and stop needing him, and once through hers as she slowly realizes how much he was quietly carrying the whole time - before resolving in a near-miss accident that the car's safety system silently prevents in one breathtaking final frame. What I think the filmmakers at Hakuhodo and SIX brilliantly did was take an invisible technical feature, the kind of thing that lives in a spec sheet and gets lost in a sales pitch, and make it *emotionally legible* by equating its constant unseen vigilance with the unseen vigilance of a parent caregiver who is always watching, always bracing, always ready to put a hand out across the passenger seat even decades after the child has grown. I think about this constantly in the work we do, because the most important care in any of our lives - the parent watching the road, the caregiver noticing the subtle decline, the daughter who finally turns around to look back - is the kind that often happens in the *background* - unrewarded and unrecorded - and our culture has built almost nothing to honor it or sustain it. We celebrate the dramatic medical interventions and ignore the DECADES of quiet attention, and we wonder why so many caregivers feel invisible. This Father's Day, I'd gently suggest we let an car commercial remind us of something true: the love that PROTECTS us is often the love we never see, the hand we don't notice until it stops us from going over the edge, and the people doing that watching DESERVE to be seen long before the near miss. The real labor is the watching. The part nobody sees and nobody thanks you for. The loving eyes that stay open long after everyone else has looked away. So to every adult child quietly keeping watch over an aging parent this Father's Day, and to every father who once did the same from the driver's seat: I see you. That vigilance is one of the purest forms of love there is. Thank you. ❤️
