I've heard people argue that there's no point to having kids write essays when AI can write essays, and my brother in Christ, the essay is not the SKILL, it is the ASSESSMENT. The skills are things like presenting a coherent thought, finding research materials, interpreting and connecting the ideas in those materials and presenting them in their own words-- you know, media literacy. The essay is simply how the student is able to prove they have those skills. It literally doesn't matter if the teacher uses AI because SHE ISN'T BEING ASSESSED.

If a student has a fun fact of a sea lion in the middle of their paper (I’m assuming not about sea lions) then they used AI to write their paper for them, defeating the purpose. That is the point of this video and I think that just heavily went over a lot of peoples’ heads

The “using AI to check for AI” argument isn’t the gotcha it seems to be. That’s like saying the police shouldn’t use computers to check for computer crimes. The appearance of hypocrisy is not necessarily hypocrisy. It depends. Let’s utilize some critical thinking.

I graduated before AI was around but even when I’d copy and paste parts of the question into google, I’d notice if something were extra. Don’t these kids see that a “blank” part of the doc is highlighted when they go to copy it 😭😭

Unfortunately, in my experience, most students keep their laptops or Chromebook in dark mode and this doesn’t work that way. Also, when I did it, I had some of my AP students who genuinely wrote their papers be like wow that’s super weird that you wanted that, but here you go anyway I guess. They even wrote notes to me in the comments 😂😂

I start from the last period and go up. And I ask the ai to flag anything that is off base in context with the rest of the material given. I’m also on dark mode so you are literally highlighting that sentence for me. 👍🏻

This specific reason is why I’m choosing to return to paper and pencils in the Fall! Not because I can’t be bothered with AI but because typing gives students easier access to AI but books, papers, pencils…the basics!
