The Thousand-Year Blood War To achieve his vision, Yhwach broke his seal and launched a devastating surprise invasion on the Soul Society. He assassinated Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto, the head-captain of the Gotei 13, and brought the Shinigami to the brink of defeat. Following this, Yhwach breached the Soul King Palace and murdered the Soul King himself, the lynchpin holding the universes together.
