@tech.explain: Why doesn't Siri activate during Apple keynotes? Siri doesn't listen to words, it listens for frequencies. In order to stop millions of Apple devices from activating during a keynote, Apple cut those frequencies from the live audio. We put that audio into a spectrogram in order to visualize the alteration.

That makes so much sense. And it also explains why every time they say “Siri” it sounds funny and kinda glitchy

Wish tv shows done this with Alexa, mine at home always get triggered, but if there’s is an advert for Alexa you’ll notice that doesn’t trigger with this being done on that

All of this is right, except that I think the chip samples audio at least 44.1 thousand times a second and not 16 thousand right? 16 bit is the “resolution” of the sample, not the samplerate. With a samplerate of 16khz you could only capture frequencies up to 8khz according to the Nyquist-Shannon theorem.

It’s funny you used that specific example of someone saying “hey siri” because that exact time during the most recent keynote it activated siri on my iphone while watching on my TV

I thought Siri only listens to your own voice 🙈

NyanBlade :
Not entirely accurate - the hey siri/siri wake word is trained to only activate for your voice. That’s why they ask you to say it several times when activating it.

But why should the Keynote activate it anyways? It’s trained on the user voice and working fine on mix phone that only I can activate it

This is more explanable than this… because Siri is trained on our own voices.
