A few drops were all it took to end her life...🧪 In August 1996, Dr. Karen Wetterhahn, a Dartmouth chemistry professor and leading expert in toxic metals, was working with dimethylmercury, one of the most dangerous chemicals known to science, when a drop or two accidentally landed on her latex-gloved hand. Months later, in November 1996, she began experiencing nausea and vomiting. Over the following weeks, her symptoms escalated rapidly: slurred speech, vision and hearing problems, and difficulty walking. By the time doctors connected her symptoms to mercury poisoning, the damage to her brain and nervous system was already irreversible. Despite aggressive treatment, she passed away in June 1997, less than a year after the exposure.
