I had postpartum anxiety and I didn't tell anyone. Not my partner. Not my mom. Not my doctor at the six-week appointment when she asked how I was doing and I said "tired but good" because that felt safer than the truth. The truth was: I couldn't stop the thoughts. The intrusive, looping, what-if thoughts that showed up the moment the house got quiet. What if something is wrong. What if I'm missing something. What if I'm not enough. What if something happens. The thoughts didn't have logic — I knew that. But knowing they weren't logical didn't make them stop. The truth was: I was smiling through something that had weight. Holding my baby and loving him completely and also existing inside a low hum of dread that I didn't know how to turn off or talk about. I didn't say anything because I was scared of what it meant. Because I thought if I said it out loud it would confirm something. Because nobody around me seemed to be struggling the way I was, which meant something must be wrong with me specifically. Nothing was wrong with me. 1 in 5 new moms experience postpartum depression or anxiety. I was the 1 in 5. I just didn't know it yet. What helped me first wasn't a therapist or a medication or a conversation I was too scared to have. It was a map on my phone at 1:58am showing me glowing dots — moms awake across Montana and Colorado and Texas and Chicago and New Orleans — all of them in their own version of this night, all of them real, none of them alone. I was the only one in my house who was awake. I was not the only one who was awake. That distinction changed something. Not everything. But something. 🤍 If you are the 1 in 5 right now — you don't have to say it out loud to anyone yet. But I want you to know: we're here. We're awake. You're not alone in it. 👇 If this is you — you don't have to say a word. Just drop a 💛 and let us count how many of us there are. #postpartumanxiety #postpartum #yourenotalone #honestmotherhood #mommentalhealth
