Нурлан Канатбеков :
Shyngys is the name of Genghis Khan. The mountainous region where he was born was later renamed in his honor to Shyngys‑tau (Shyngys — mountain). In Kazakhstan, there are three closely located elevations called Shyngystau, Shyngystay, and Khan‑shyngys, and they are undoubtedly dedicated to Shyngyskhan. 1) His name at birth was Shyngys, and he was born in the foothills of Shyngys‑tau (Shyngys Mountain). 2) As a young man, he spent some time with his future bride in the area of Shyngystay, and when he became a celebrated man, the area came to be named after him (Turkic nomads add affectionate prefixes such as “tai” or “tailak” to children’s names, equating them with cute foals, camel calves, etc.: Shyngys‑tai). 3). Khan‑shynghys is the place where he was elevated to the rank of khan. And when he became a tested ruler with iron discipline, he was nicknamed “Temir‑shyn” — “Hardened Iron”. Later historians began to confuse the fact that he was born Temurshin and later renamed Genghis Khan. Among nomads, it is not customary to change a name with age, and besides, the same name was not repeated twice within an entire clan until the seventh generation. Batu Khan was nicknamed “Sayın Khan” (the Magnanimous Khan).
P.S. The Kazakh tribes of Naiman, Konyrat, and Kerey still live in these lands.
“The Secret History of the Mongols” was written in 1230 using Turkic script and is dominated by Turkicisms. The original is missing. The copyist of the text did not understand what the second name Temirshyn meant and, without any malicious intent, entered it as the khan’s childhood name.
