if you can't lift it, you need to check it.

My friend who was a flight attendants said they are discouraged from assisting passengers with putting bags in the overhead because they don't get paid until the doors close so if they get hurt helping they can't do worker's comp for it.

For anyone confused: at most major airlines in the U.S. and Canada, flight attendants do not start earning their hourly wage until the aircraft door is fully closed and the pilots release the parking brake to begin pushing back from the gate. So helping with bags is working for free

Maybe if airlines covered injuries during boarding or even payed flight attendants during boarding they would help

FAs are there to attend to the flight crew and ensure safety and security. Helping passengers is not their primary objective

FAs are NOT there to help lift bags. This is such a common misconception.

As a flight attendant, it’s insane that people expect us to life their bags. We don’t mind assisting you and helping you lift it. But if you can’t do it, we can check it for FREE for you. But to say we don’t like our jobs, or that’s bad customer service is actually wrong. We are trained not to lift them. To my knowledge it’s never been our job, but after being freindly and helpful..most airlines tell us not to and even took away our coverage during boarding to make sure we aren’t lifting other peoples bags for them. If you can’t lift them yourself…check them at the gate for FREE.

I’m 25 and 4’11.5” and this is a struggle every time. If I lift my carry on suitcase I have to lift it and then balance it on my head and then yeet it into the carry-on space. So I just wait until I see someone tall and ask for help
