as your logic is good for the 90s it contradicts what they were going for. if your pump has an issue it's designed to spin the gear and keep the pump from putting metal throughout the motor destroying the engine.

So just like every other dmax engine. The pin is to align it. The balancer must be torqued correctly. End of story

After all of your rebuilds common sense to those engineers and engineers builders of duramax diesel engines. Perhaps they are ashamed to admit their design is flawed. Either way you are making bank. I would send you my business in the future I have a few workhorses that have these motors in them. Chevy Silverado and GMCsierra 2003 both of them. Equipped with bully dog smart boxes. The Silverado tore the transfer case apart at the tail snapping the drive linear the tranny yoke u joint. Hauling a heavy load of firewood during a moderate acceleration into third gear. Automatic Allison six speed.

ATI super dampener . An ARP bolt torque spec. Way tighter than the factory. But I get what you’re saying. Pins are temporary. Key way is permanent.

So in that case with the oil pump failing the key you refer to won’t do anything. It’s likely to break your pin to on a seized pump.
