In Western societies, schools and institutions may require a diagnosis to access funding, support workers, and accommodations. A diagnosis can also help teachers and professionals better advocate for your child. We also talk honestly about the emotional toll the assessment process can have on whānau. Through lived experience in the disability sector and raising autistic children, we’ve learned that a diagnosis is a tool not an identity. For children who struggle with regulation and independence within institutional settings, a diagnosis can open doors to support. For others living in natural or less structured communities, it may be less necessary. Every child is different.
