A bad maxilla at age 12 does not mean it is “over.” Research on longitudinal craniofacial growth shows that the maxilla continues developing through adolescence, with substantial individual variation. In boys, one longitudinal study estimated the average cessation of maxillary-length growth at around age 20, although the major growth spurt occurs much earlier and growth gradually slows afterward. So the claim that “if you have a bad maxilla at 12, you're finished” is not supported by the research. At 12, the face and jaws are still developing, and puberty timing differs significantly between individuals. However, continued natural growth does not mean someone can deliberately force the maxilla forward with mewing or other internet “hacks.” If there is a genuine concern about jaw position, bite, or facial development, an orthodontist can evaluate it properly. In short: 12 is absolutely not a fixed deadline for maxillary development.
