The N-3B parka, commonly known as the “snorkel parka,” was developed by the United States Air Force in the early 1950s to protect flight crews in extremely cold environments, withstanding temperatures as low as -60°F (-51°C). The design featured a 3/4 length, a full attached hood trimmed with fur, and an outer shell made of sage green DuPont flight silk nylon, with a wool blanket-type material for insulation. The hood could be zipped up, leaving only a small opening, resembling a snorkel, hence the nickname. In 1958, the N-3B was officially introduced, evolving from earlier models like the N-3 and N-3A. The parka underwent several specification changes over the years, including updates to materials and colors. By the mid-1970s, the insulation was changed to polyester wadding, making the jacket both lighter and warmer, and the outer shell material transitioned to a sage green cotton-nylon blend. Alpha Industries, a notable manufacturer, began producing the N-3B parka in 1959. The parka became available to civilians through military surplus stores and was adopted for its durability and warmth. In the 1970s and 1980s, civilian versions were produced in various colors, often featuring an orange diamond-quilted nylon lining. The N-3B regained popularity in Europe in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Today, the N-3B parka remains a popular choice for cold-weather outerwear, appreciated for its functional design and historical significance. THIS JACKET HAS BEEN REFERENCED EVERYWHERE AND REMAINS ONE OF THE TOP DESIGNS FOR WINTER OUTERWEAR DESIGNS. #n3b #archivefashion
