A real planet is slowly falling toward its star. WASP-12b is a gas giant about 1,400 light-years away. Its entire year lasts only 26 hours because it circles roughly 3.5 million km (2.2 million mi) from its star—about 43 times closer than Earth is to the Sun. That close orbit is physically changing the planet in two related ways. WASP-12b is tidally locked, meaning the same side always faces its star. Across the planet, the star's gravity is stronger on the nearer side than the farther side; that gravity difference produces the tidal stretch. Intense heat also swells the atmosphere. Like other gas giants, WASP-12b's bulk atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium, while Hubble detected ultraviolet absorption from metals—including magnesium—in gas extending beyond the planet's normal boundary. Hubble did not photograph the glowing bridge shown in the artist visualization; the shape of the escaping flow is a scientific interpretation of the absorption data. TESS transit timing shows the orbital period shrinking by about 30 milliseconds per year. That sounds tiny, but repeated orbit after orbit it corresponds to an estimated inspiral timescale of roughly 3 million years. The ending is not one sudden crash: gas escapes, the orbit tightens, and the star gradually consumes the planet. Artist visualization; tidal deformation and gas-flow geometry are exaggerated or simplified for visibility. Source credit: NASA Exoplanet Archive; NASA Hubble/COS; Fossati et al., The Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2010; Wong et al., The Astronomical Journal, 2022; Akinsanmi et al., Astronomy & Astrophysics, 2024.
