I don’t think these Tik Toks are helpful for the therapy field. They lack nuance and conte t and I’ve seen several clients panicking in the comment section about their therapist despite them feeling very connected to their therapist.

There is a lot of nuance in this field regarding advice.

Doctoral level psychotherapists can absolutely discuss medications with patients, specifically in terms of psychoeducation re: how certain medications work, why they may work well based on pt presentation, etc. we are training in psychopharmacology. While we do not prescribe or determine what medications a pt should take per say, we absolutely can collaborate with their medical team and advocate for certain medications based on our experience with the pt with ultimate decision being made by the prescriber! 🤗

If a client asks my opinion on medication, I just straight up tell them I'm not qualified and refer them to someone who is.

Does anyone have any advice on how to tell my therapist I won’t be seeing her anymore due to her ai usage? She never was up front with me that she was using AI and recently during our sessions I can tell she’s just verbatim reading off a chat gpt script with what to say the ENTIRE time, it’s so frustrating this whole experience has just left me feeling betrayed

These types of videos can also cause a lot of questioning and uncertainty for vulnerable clients. I’d watch out with making these simplified short videos about such complex topics. It almost has a “mean girl” vibe to it.

I’m so messed up from my therapist. We communicated so much in the beginning for soooo long via email. Then last 6 months we had to try to repair our rupture bc she had to change her availability and isn’t able to email much now. And it’s really messed up my attachment issue because of past trauma with therapists and this one and I had to leave her which I didn’t want to do because there was no solution to fit both our needs and now I just feel like I’m left to manage this all on my own.

I think that a therapist thinking and talking about certain medications that they have seen help patient with it directly recommending them is okay because I think it’s important for psychiatrists and therapists to both have an opinion as the therapist sees you got an hour and a psychiatrist for 10 mins.

We can give advice of what strategies to try to cope with their identified symptoms which can feel to a client like “giving advice” but it’s so different than “I think you should do this”

It’s ok to inform a client of what’s widely know about a medication and advise the to talk to their prescriber about whether that would be a good option for them. That’s totally ethical and legal

when clients ask me for advice I always tell them I can't give them advice but we can talk through options and work through ways to have those conversations. meds are difficult. I would never say take this medication but I will provide education on psych services and there are meds for certain things that may help anxiety, nightmares, depression. I will list many meds just letting them know there are many meds and they all work differently for different people.
