This scene was so important, because it shows that BOTH of them had so much depth. We knew how complex Yelena was, but Alexei was always played as a joke. This scene breaks down his facade so well. He wanted to be this legend, the Red Guardian, essentially Soviet Captain America, but all that was because he just wanted to believe he mattered. And all that time, he couldn't even convince himself he mattered to Yelena, the girl that saw him as the only father she ever knew
