✨ Peace of mind is priceless. ✨ It shows what THEY prioritize-money, leverage, transactional relationships, tit for tat, infantilizing, punishments, subservience etc. They do not value real relationships-it is clear even in their dysfunctional marriage-constant berating, belittling, sleeping in separate bedrooms yet refuse to divorce after 40+ yrs-toxic co-dependent dysfunctional relationship for decades. 💯💯💯

I always wonder and sometimes ask those parents if they would really want the relationship to resume on this transactional basis. Wouldn’t that feel yucky knowing your kid is there for the money and not for true connection?

You nailed it. This is 100% my mother. About a decade ago before I was estranged she told me that they had taken my estranged sister out of the will. I remember thinking that was so odd of her to tell me at the time. Looking back she was warning me. I have no doubt I also am out of the will. Three out of the 4 of us siblings are out of the will. I will not be bought with money.

I cannot tell you how many times I was told as I was growing up that I needed to behave and play nice (accept their abuse) with my grandparents because they secretly had a lot of money that would come to me when they died. my grandma called me greedy when I was nice to her, even when I was a literal still growing my big teeth child. among a lot of other colorful descriptions from her and my mother. constantly called ungrateful. when I finally cut ties, I was so relieved. the horrible things she said to me still play through my head but my sons won't ever know that. she started with one when he was 3 and that was my last straw. I still have a happy Christmas voicemail she left I listen to, I know it was meant to make me feel obligated to call her but it's nice to hear her say something nice to me. I don't want any money she may have. if any finds it's way to me it'll be donated.
