@shallowchal: Builders are walking a financial tightrope. Fixed-price contracts, rising costs, and inflation mean many are on the brink of collapse. Is this the final nail? #Construction #Business #Economy #Australia #BuildingIndustry #Warning

Ran a building company for 10+ years and left industry. never been happier. Builders have to absorb shit from entitled clients, sub contractors, council, ato, home warranty, suppliers. Everyone runs when something goes wrong and points finger at the builder. Risk vs reward is gone. Most builders arent profitable unless you build for the wealthy on a cost plus contract where they are happy to pay for top range/skilled contractors who are few and far between who can charge ultra premium prices.

No, so many builders go broke, because they use the surplus cash flow to fund their own lifestyle when times are tough, but they never replenish the cash flow when times are tough.

Dont promise to build something a year down the track. Organise your stuff better, stop using old school tactics. Realistically if you had a full team of trades or quality contractors who dont f around or muck up timeframes/schedules you can have a house from slab to move in sorted within 3-4 months but instead there's always set backs, delays, passing the buck blaming other trades, guys not turning up until a week later throwing out the next blokes week of work/schedule. worried about 12% inflation? Thats worse case 4% over a quarter so build the team and house better...

There is hardly any margins left in ANY business anymore, the government takes it all. !!! It’s disgusting, I’ve had successful businesses in the past, but if anyone was to ask me if they should open & run a business, i tell them to forget about, expenses & running cost are not just high, they are out of control !!!

why does the cost to builders keep going up? cost to customers has doubled since 2021 yet builder margins are still thin. government fees and building regs are one thing. what else?

if you can why have building materials not gone down since covid? up by 30 to 40% between 2020-24 and still climbing is just a massive money grab by suppliers.

I can tell you one of the biggest contributing factors to this, ICARE in NSW. There needs to be a class action against them. A 28% increase on our policy premium in 12 months! 180k a year!

The questions that Australia needs to ask itself it why is it costing so much for materials to build a house? I’m from the uk originally and my friends are in these industries and they need double amounts of materials to build a house and they is a lot of money in this industry. Makes no sense.
