In February 2025 in Corinth, New York, police were called to the home of Joycelynn Dylewski when her parents, Samantha and Matthew Dylewski, reported that she was having trouble breathing. When police arrived, they noticed that the home was in deplorable conditions for Joycelynn and her four siblings. She was eventually taken to a local hospital where she passed away. Both parents were initially charged with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child — one for each of their five children. They were both arrested about a week later for violating an order of protection barring contact with their children. Police described Joycelynn as having black, rotten teeth, with lice and dead cockroaches found on her body. Leading up to Joycelynn’s death, police say she was given unprescribed blood pressure medicine, however this was not the cause of death. In May 2025, it was officially reported that Joycelynn’s death was ruled a homicide due to acute and chronic neglect. The Dylewski’s accepted a plea deal and pled guilty to criminally negligent homicide. On June 8, Samantha was sentenced to 16 months to 4 years in prison for her role in Joycelynn’s death. On June 22, Matthew was also sentenced to 16 months to 4 years in prison. During his sentencing he lamented his failures as a father and claimed that he wished he had died that day instead of Joycelynn.
