Offside for Americans. The quarterback has the ball and the receiver is running. The free safety is the last man. The quarterback cannot pass the ball to the receiver if he is already behind the safety, he has to be in front, or level with the safety BEFORE the ball is passed, otherwise he is offside.

Offsides is when the pass is attempted (left the foot of the offensive player to teammate), if teammate is past the last defender at that time it is offsides. This is set to prevent cherry picking and leaving an offensive man deep.
