Have you seen/stitched candilcan23’s video on “They went no contact because of POLITICS”? I’d love to see you approach that one. It is 0% surprising to me that many estranged parents feel that way, but the failure to understand that a political vote impacts the lives of those in our communities is frankly tragic.

“This hurts me more than it hurts you” - turns out that’s far more accurate than they ever realized.

Authoritarian parenting doesn’t make room for developmentally appropriate differentiation in adolescence, setting parents & adult children up for precisely this dynamic, where adult children are forced to choose between remaining stagnant in their development, at great personal cost, or estrangement.

When I was in middle school (I think), my parents made it a rule we couldn’t just ask “why”, we had to ask “may I ask why”. And then they’d just say “no, you may not” cause they’re the parents and we should just auto obey.

The amount of times I was told “children are to be seen and not heard” growing up. And they wonder why they don’t see or hear from me now.

I met my husband when I was 28 and that was the first time I felt loved ... but no it's his fault I don't speak to my mother.

I had a coworker ask me what I thought about therapists advising their clients to cut off contact with parents instead of forgiving them. I just said "oh good therapists don't give advice. they just help you figure out your values and make decisions based on those" 🙃

We had a Dobson book on the back of the toilet in my parents room. A decade ago my therapist told me to cut off both of my parents.

Yes raised in a James Dobson and IBLP family. So much abuse. Side note: as an adult I got a pastor fired for abuse and then he went on to work for Focus on the Family. Totally checks out.

After 2 years my mom wrote me a letter letting me know that enough time has passed and we need to work on our relationship for the future and stop thinking about the past…so nice of her to tell me how this works 😂 I laughed out loud and threw the letter in the trash.

We were a big FOTF family. Both of my older brothers passed due to addiction/mental health issues. One at 26 & one at 37, and I’m going on almost a decade of very low/no contact with our parents. My brothers were also mostly estranged from them as well. So, yes, this is a very correct take.

I gotta tell you, a clinician who works with the children of this dynamic, thank you for your work and content. You help support me in doing what I do and validate the parts of me that navigated this too. Thank you! 🥰🥰🥰

Like we know they don’t respond to logic or reason. But wouldn’t you think if the professionals and those trained in their fields are able to recognize your parenting and “religious teachings” as abuse. Maybe just maybe… it is abusive?

I went nó contact. The only thing that helped was my therapist talking to my mom's therapist and years of individual therapy before our therapists facilitated a conversation with us. I'm so thankful... My mom finally addressed SO much and did a lot of work to grow into someone I can have a relationship with

I was raised by FotF and I’m fully NC with not just my parents, but by extension, I unfortunately had to cut off all extended family too.

I left the church 9yrs ago. The only reason I’m not no contact at this point is because 1) they live in another state and 2) everything’s fine as long as we only discuss extended family gossip, tv shows, and the weather.🙃🫠
