In the modern history of Afghanistan, one of the greatest figures of science, technology, and national pride was the late Abdul Ahad Mohmand. He was not only the first Afghan astronaut, but also counted among the first astronauts of the Islamic world who became part of humanity's greatest scientific journey-human spaceflight. The late Abdul Ahad Mohmand traveled to space on August 29, 1988, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome of the Soviet Union aboard the Soyuz TM-6 spacecraft. He was the first citizen of Afghanistan and the fourth Muslim astronaut in the world to leave Earth's gravity, representing his country in this major milestone of human scientific achievement. One of the historical aspects of his space journey was that he took a copy of the Holy Quran with him into space.
