Late LIEUTENANT COLONEL M BITIYONG He passed away on the 5th March, 1986 after the military government General IB Babangida accused and arrested the senior officer of treason as part of the alleged Major General Mamman Vatsa Coup against the Head of state. MILITARY CAREER Lt.Col Bitiyong started his military career as a boy soldier of the prestigious Nigerian Military School (NMS), Zaria on the 23 January, 1961 upon graduation he was enlisted into the Nigerian Army in 1965. He proceeded for his officer cadetship training at Mons Officer’s Cadet School, Aldershot, United Kingdom in 1966 and was granted presidential Regular Combatant commission to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant into the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps on the 1st August, 1967. He fought and lead troops of soldiers during the civil war as a young officer earning a strong reputation for Bravery, Competence and toughness as an infantry combatant officer. Lt. Col played a pivotal role in the establishment of Nigerian Airborne Training Program and help develop the special warfare wing. He was tasked in setting up the country first Airborne Battalion. APPOINTMENTS HELD The senior officer held instructional, staff and field command roles namely:- - Director of Logistics Planning HQ ARMY, Abuja. - Deputy Commandant NIGERIAN ARMY SCHOOL OF INFANTRY (NASI), Jaji. - Commander 7th INFANTRY BRIGADE, Sokoto. - Commander 13th AMPHIBIOUS BRIGADE, Calabar. - Commanding Officer (CO) 130th BATTALION, Ikom. - Directing Staff (DS) ARMED FORCES COMMAND & STAFF COLLEGE (AFCSC), Jaji. - Colonel Adminstration & Quartering (AQ) 82 DIVISION, Enugu.
