🇲🇲Born in 1808, King Mindon was deeply religious from a young age and was widely beloved, earning the affectionate title "The Great Prince." After ascending the throne in 1853, his first major achievement was the founding of the new royal capital, Yadanabon (Mandalay), at the foot of Mandalay Hill. He brought glory to Myanmar on the world stage for one final time, adorned with golden cultures and magnificent palace halls. King Mindon was by no means a traditionalist monarch. Working hand-in-hand with his brother, Crown Prince Kanaung, he strove tirelessly to lead Myanmar into the industrial age. He established over 50 factories, including mints and armories, and sent young scholars to Europe for their education. His vision—"If we cannot defeat the British with weapons, we must compete with them through knowledge"—was an incredibly forward-thinking philosophy for Southeast Asia at that time. However, in 1866, King Mindon faced the most devastating tragedy of his life. His own sons, the Myingun and Myinkhondaing princes, in an attempt to seize the throne, assassinated his most trusted right-hand man, his brother Prince Kanaung. This tragedy, where his sons murdered his brother, left King Mindon heartbroken, and Myanmar's dreams of modernization came to a sudden halt that very day. For the remainder of his life, King Mindon focused solely on religious affairs. He commissioned the carving of the Tipitaka (Buddhist scriptures) onto 729 stone slabs, leaving behind the "World's Largest Book" at the Kuthodaw Pagoda as a historical legacy. Upon his death in 1878, King Thibaw ascended the throne amidst palace intrigues. King Mindon was a monarch who protected and guided his country through the fires of war as best as he could, and the city of Mandalay he built, along with his religious contributions, ensures he lives on forever in the hearts of the Myanmar people as "The Convenor of the Fifth Buddhist Council."🇲🇲 #royalfamily #british #kingmindon #History #myanmar
