@globalelephants: There’s a road and a corridor between the Male Asian Habitat (where Baby is) and one of the yards in the Female Asian Habitat; if everyone is positioned in just the right spot, whoever is on the barn side of the creek in Yard 5 in the female Asian yard can spy Baby from a distance, and vice versa. While caregivers encouraged Baby to explore, she went to one of the areas she was in yesterday, at the far end of Yard 1, which is where they could potentially all see each other. Across the way is an area the other girls will come to for meals, and this afternoon the girls were there for Bambi’s eye drops. When caregivers approached, Bambi had her ears out and was listening across the way. It became clear that Bambi had noticed Baby, glancing with eyes wide and ears out, staring at a fixed point; she didn’t seem unsettled by this new individual, but was focused on her with curiosity. A moment later, Bambi raised her trunk, seeming to be investigating further. Maia shortly began to focus her attention on Baby as well. Baby walked in the direction of the other two, into an area that made her visible to them. Baby began bathing in the water trough, splashing loudly. After a moment, Maia lifted one of her feet onto the fence and raised her trunk in the same way that Bambi did. Bambi’s ears got wider and she shifted her trunk closer in the direction where Baby was standing. Bambi then began snacking on some hay, watching in Baby’s direction intently. Right now, there’s some curiosity, but not to the point where the two groups of elephants walked as near to each other as possible. Maia and Bambi now know where they can find Baby–and it will be up to all four of them (including Guille) as to whether they want to spend more time across the road from each other. Dynamics change every day and relationships are nuanced, so things may adjust and curiosities may be refreshed depending on the day.
