Opposite. If the volume is down, I’m still listening to it and barely tolerating you talking but want to seem polite. If I pause it’s because I’m actually interested in both tv and you and want to hear your story but then continue to watch tv when you’re done. If I turn off the tv, you have my undivided attention. Don’t teach “social cues” on a topic everyone is different in. You’re just spreading misinformation.

I'm pausing because I can't concentrate on the two things and keep track of both, so my body mutes the show to hear you. i can't watch a show and intentionally miss parts of it. I'd rather turn it off and try again after company leaves.
