We heard a speech from a woman who had interviewed American nurses who were in Phuket I believe, don’t quote me. But same thing, the nurses were held captive and had to care for Japanese soldiers. Our questions about any sexual assaults were ignored. And no report of it.

As an Aussie RN of fifty years I can so relate to the sisterhood of these nurses. So heartbreaking. 💔

When Vivian returned home she achieved so much in her career. She was the first woman on the Australian war memorial board. She established the Australian nurses memorial Centre in Victoria and campaigned for nursing to be recognised as a professional university bachelors degree. She also participated in operation baby left during the Vietnam war. There’s a really amazing charity in Australia that has made sure her and the nurses who died will never be forgotten in creating a statue of her at the Australian national War Memorial and it is the first and only statue of a woman and a nurse on the memorial grounds. And they also established a scholarship in her name that provides leadership training for nurses across Australia. And each scholarship is in memory of her in the 21 nurses that died on the beach.

I am not surprised that they did those additional atrocities. There's multiple memorials dedicated to the "comfort women" that the Japanese Army took advantage of. It's disgusting

Australians know this story well. I will never forget, forgive or trust the Japanese. My family lived in far north Queensland Australia and knew the story.

took a long time for a lot of the atrocities committed by the Imperial Army to come out. thankfully they did, wish the women that were victimized were able to have seen the modicum of justice that was served whether it was the "comfort women" or the nurses

I’m Australian I grew up with learning about Australian involvement in WWII never heard of this incident till this year. This is overwhelming. Growing up the old people would dislike everything that was the “enemy” WW11. It just sounds so bad.
