@plantwave: In Costa Rica, we recorded the bioelectric signals of a banana plant in flower. The deep pink shape hanging from it is the banana heart, the plant's flower, and every banana that forms will emerge from beneath it. A banana is not a tree. It is the largest herb on Earth, and the trunk is not wood but a tight column of leaf bases wrapped around each other. Each plant flowers and fruits a single time, then dies back while a new shoot rises from the same root to carry the line forward. Across much of Hindu and Buddhist Southeast Asia the banana plant is treated as sacred, planted at gates and thresholds and offered in temple rituals. We gave this one a gamelan, the bronze percussion of Indonesia, and a pad whose filter opens and closes as the plant grows more active.
