It is named after Ronald Graham and became widely known after Martin Gardner described it in his "Mathematical Games" column in Scientific American in November 1977. In unpublished work, Graham established a bound so large that it was once considered the largest number ever used in a serious mathematical proof. In 1980, the Guinness Book of World Records reinforced this claim, further drawing public attention to the number. Graham's number is far beyond imagination compared to other large numbers such as a googol and a googolplex, and it is even larger than Skewes' number.
