🕯️ THE VANISHING – Three Keepers Disappear on Eilean Mòr In December 1900, three lighthouse keepers — James Ducat, Thomas Marshall and Donald McArthur — were on duty at the Flannan Isles Lighthouse on Eilean Mòr, a remote island west of Scotland’s Isle of Lewis. A passing ship reported that the lighthouse was dark around midnight on 15 December. Eleven days later, on 26 December 1900, the lighthouse tender Hesperus arrived for a routine relief visit. There was no response to its horn or to a rocket fired from the ship. Relief keeper Joseph Moore went ashore and found the station deserted. Inside, the lamps had been prepared, the lens and machinery had been cleaned and the kitchen was tidy. Weather observations had been recorded on a slate up to the morning of 15 December, indicating that the keepers had completed their normal morning duties. Two sets of outdoor clothing were missing. At the island’s West Landing, investigators found extensive storm damage: iron railings had been twisted and broken, equipment had been displaced and a large stone had been moved from its position. Despite searches, no trace of Ducat, Marshall or McArthur was ever found. Their deaths were officially recorded as “probably drowning.” Sources 1. Northern Lighthouse Board — Flannan Isles 2.
