In Chinese culture the Year of the Goat is viewed as unfavorable for childbirth, not because of the children themselves, but because of what the Goat symbolizes. The Goat is associated with gentleness, endurance, and sacrifice, which historically led to the belief that Goat-year children—especially girls—would face harder lives or have less social support. Because of this stigma parents try to avoid Goat years altogether, timing births for the year before (horse - this year 2026) or after (monkey 2028) instead. That belief is strong enough that China consistently sees a dip in births during Goat years, which later results in smaller school cohorts and less competition. Cultural beliefs can shape real population patterns! Listen to the full conversation on this week’s Mind Your Manners episode - “Your Acne Isn’t Random: What TCM Sees on Your Face”
