@thenationalaccount: Are data centres slowing down Australia's shift to cheaper energy? | Data centres in Australia are supposed to run on clean energy. The government currently says it’ll fast track the ones that do. But instead of building new energy sources to power data centres, operators are using a loophole that means no new supply of energy is being added to the grid. The North Shore Lorikeet’s Huw Bradshaw explains how data centres are soaking up renewable energy that was meant to help Australia move off coal and gas, without bringing on any extra. #Australia #News #AI #TheNationalAccount #datacenter
they need to build renewable power and desalination plants, and provide more jobs than they replace before they're allowed to exist

Absolutely it should be in the planning requirements

Data Centres shouldn't be built if the company isn't building renewable power sources to fuel them. Pretty simple solution. Stop the leeching of money from the working class to the capital class

except data centre Australia have said they will use existing grid, claim will use 70% renewable and aussies will foot bill like a TV station was the analogy their spokesperson used along with the well its no noisier than an air conditioner. and to just read their reports over taking lived experiences and examples of the issues around world. they did acknowledge the significant water usage but ignored the questions around any environmental impact assessments or community consultation. given approvals have been fast tracked its a farce to set up an environmental oversight department after all the damage is in place

There are other countries who make it the data centre’s responsibility to build their own energy and water infrastructure to be able to operate, they can’t use existing resources which will consequently inflate utilities for the local communities they’re built in. It’s not that hard but our government is full of billionaire bootlickers

The Chinese are dropping the data centres 35 kms into the ocean (to reduce the cooling needs 90%) and powering them with their own wind turbines (fact check me just in case) and are processing 7000 queries per second. And I’m not sure why we all wouldn’t be doing this?
