@helloimttkt: The time has come to have the conversation 😭 Before you get your panties in a wad, I’m familiar with the history on both sides including politics and connotations that entail but I’d like to offer some nuance. When it comes to Vietnamese History the more I experience, the more I find that there are multiple truths at once.

Love these conversations. My family still not ready & I'm almost 50, born in S.Cal & my parents came in '75. I got a lot of stories from when I was a therapist for older Vietnamese immigrants in SGV. I need to get to this museum. Thanks for sharing.

I remember my dad taking me to a protest in Westminster when I was a kid (which my mom was not happy about). I remember my brother had a school project of making a flag of your ethnicity and he brought home that other flag… laminated. Our dad was so angry and tried tearing it up 😩

I sympathize with this point. My husband’s mom was PISSED that we went to Vietnam. When I told her it’s safe now, she wouldn’t believe me. I went back again with my sister and when I came back she told me she’s starting to accept that Vietnam might be okay now but she’s just so scared because of her trauma 😭

these are experiences that are so unique about viet generational trauma. i talk about it quite often bc i have so many friends that are bac/hue/nam and perspective brings so much nuance to both flags. while both sides have experienced traumatic events, viet refugees in america had to find community to survive and preserve their own trad values. youre also so right about being privileged enough to have convos ab this topic while being so far removed from what happened during the war. it just matters that we have empathy for the experiences of all sides. many were innocent people who experienced different parts of the war and have survived understanding that they went through the same hurt inflicted by different people
