Hell’s Angels (1930) is a massive, independent pre-Code WWI aviation epic directed and produced by Howard Hughes. Famous for its pioneering dogfight sequences, massive budget, and the screen breakthrough of actress Jean Harlow, the film blends early sound technology with sweeping, dangerous real-world aerial stunts. In pursuit of unprecedented realism, the shoot resulted in the deaths of three stunt bilots and a mechanic, dozens of mid-air emergencies, and a near-fatal crash by Hughes himself. In one notorious scene depicting a plane going down in flames, the stunt pilot and a mechanic were supposed to bail out with parachutes. The pilot jumped, but the mechanic stayed in the cabin to operate the smoke and flame pots and died in the resulting plunge. That fatal drop was kept and used in the final cut of the film.
