Every muscle locked at once; his grip slipped from Victor’s jacket and his back arched in agony. The current ripped through his chest, down his stomach, and burst into the base of the tail, as if the belt itself were carrying the pain through his entire body. Ethan collapsed onto the floor, convulsing. The heavy scarlet tail slammed against the polished ground with a wet, jarring thud. He tried to push himself up, but Victor struck him with another shock before he could lift his head. His vision blurred. The last thing Ethan saw clearly was Victor kneeling in front of him, calm and composed, brushing a damp strand of hair away from Ethan’s forehead with an almost gentle gesture. “Don’t do that again, Ethan,” he murmured. “You still don’t understand how valuable you are.” The room began to dissolve into darkness. As consciousness slipped away, Ethan heard assistants rushing inside. There were muffled orders, hurried footsteps, and the screech of a metal stretcher being wheeled across the floor.
