@andeecys: This is probably one of the most personal stories I’m sharing online. When my mum first told me she wouldn’t attend my wedding, I was devastated. Heartbroken. Because this wasn’t just about a wedding. It was about wanting the person who had loved me my entire life to be there for one of the most important moments of it. For a long time, I struggled to understand. I questioned whether she truly accepted me. Whether things would ever change. Whether I would have to make peace with a future where she wasn’t part of this chapter of my life. What I’ve come to learn is that when we come out as queer, we ask the people we love to reimagine a future they may have pictured differently for years. Sometimes decades. Some parents get there quickly. Some take longer. Some are still trying. A year after telling me she wouldn’t attend, my mum changed her mind at the last minute, and she showed up to both my weddings. In Taiwan, she walked me down the aisle. Then she stood in front of all our family and friends and gave a a really sincere speech. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that moment. Not because it erased the pain that came before it. But because it reminded me that people can grow. People can learn. People can surprise us. Most importantly, love can evolve. To anyone navigating a difficult relationship with a parent right now, I can’t promise your story will end like mine. But I hope this reminds you that sometimes the chapter you’re in isn’t the final one.
